Obverse description Blue-grey ground with a black outer border enclosing star-shaped corner ornaments bearing the denomination numerals '50' at upper left and right and 'Pfg' at lower left and right in red-stippled rosettes. A central vignette in expressionist pen-and-ink style illustrates the old Oldendorf custom of the town lantern-bearer leading the magistrate through the streets, rendered in black line on a light ground; flanking the vignette on each side is a detailed letterpress illustration of an ornate civic lantern in yellow-green. A text panel above the central vignette carries the local adage in Gothic script, while the lower panel bears the issue date, the mayor's manuscript signature, and a serial number in black letterpress.

Hessisch Oldendorf was among the thousands of German municipalities that issued emergency small-change notes — Kleingeldscheine — during the postwar coin shortage, when hoarding and metal scarcity had stripped pfennig denominations almost entirely from circulation. Rudolf Hillebrecht, who later became Hanover's influential city architect after World War II, designed these notes early in his career. Edler & Krische in Hanover were prolific printers of Notgeld for the region.

The two varieties catalogued under 606.1-2 likely differ in a minor printing detail — serial color, paper stock, or a typographical variant — rather than representing separate issue dates.
