Friedrichstadt, a small town in Schleswig-Holstein founded by Dutch Remonstrants in 1621, issued this 50 Pfennig Notgeld during the inflationary spiral of the early Weimar period. The designer credit — "Architekt B.D.A." after Hans Philipp's name — indicates membership in the Bund Deutscher Architekten, an unusual distinction for a Notgeld commission. Local authorities frequently turned to architects rather than commercial illustrators for these small emergency issues, particularly in towns proud of their civic identity.

Friedrichstadt's Dutch colonial street plan and canal network were a point of local pride, and that distinctiveness almost certainly informed the commission.
