Comments

Norderdithmarschen's 1921 Notgeld issue belongs to the flood of emergency municipal scrip that German local authorities produced between 1919 and 1922 when the Reichsbank could not keep small-denomination coins in circulation fast enough to meet demand. The Kreis — a rural administrative district on the North Sea coast of Schleswig-Holstein — turned to Dithmarschen Verlag in nearby Büsum rather than one of the larger Leipzig or Berlin printers, which was unusual enough to be worth noting. Most Kreise of comparable size sourced their Notgeld from specialist printers catering to the collector trade.

Büsum-printed issues from this publisher are less commonly encountered than the mass-produced series, and the short print runs reflect local, not national, distribution.
