Möllenbeck is a small village in the Schaumburg district of Lower Saxony, and its decision to issue notgeld in 1921 reflects how thoroughly the postwar coin shortage penetrated even the most rural German municipalities. The designer credited here, Rudolf Hillebrecht, later became one of postwar Germany's most prominent urban planners — he rebuilt much of Hanover after the Second World War — but in 1921 he was still in the early stages of his career, and occasional commercial work of this kind was not unusual for young designers in the region.
Edler & Krische, the Hanover printer, handled a considerable volume of Schaumburg-area notgeld during this period.
