Burgsteinfurt's 1921 notgeld issue came out of the same postwar emergency that flooded Germany with thousands of municipal small-change substitutes — but this one has a more specific paper trail than most. The design was produced by Hermann Schreibel of Bitterfeld, a commercial artist and small-press operator who supplied notgeld artwork to several Westphalian municipalities during the 1920–1921 peak of the small-denomination shortage, while the actual printing was handled by Hartfisch & Lange in Eberstadt.

That division between designer and printer, across two different towns, was common enough in the notgeld trade but makes provenance attribution messier than the notes themselves suggest.
