Ober Salzbrunn was a spa town in Lower Silesia, its economy built almost entirely around its mineral springs and the wealthy visitors who came to take the waters. This 1921 Notgeld issue belongs to the enormous wave of municipal emergency currency that flooded Germany during the postwar inflationary crisis, when small-denomination coins simply vanished from circulation — hoarded, melted, or rendered economically worthless by rising prices.

Grass, Barth & Comp., operating under the W. Friedrich imprint in Breslau, produced a substantial volume of Silesian Notgeld during this period. The town itself ceased to exist as an independent municipality decades later, absorbed into what is now Szczawno-Zdrój.
