Malente-Gremsmühlen was a hyphenated municipality in Holstein, the product of an administrative merger that left it with two train stations and a growing lakeside tourism trade. This note is Notgeld — emergency small change issued because the postwar coin shortage made everyday transactions nearly impossible in smaller communities. Municipal bodies across Germany flooded the market with their own scrip between 1919 and 1922, and the Gemeindevorstand here joined that wave using the Lübeck printer Gebrüder Borchers, a firm that handled regional Notgeld work across Schleswig-Holstein.
The DeNG reference suffix ".3-4/4" suggests this is one of a matched series, likely with at least three companion values or designs issued concurrently.
