The printer here is the real curiosity. Altenburger Spielkartenfabrik — a playing card manufacturer — was one of several non-specialist firms pressed into notgeld production as German municipalities scrambled to cover the small-change shortage of the early 1920s. Altenburg had been a center of playing card production since the sixteenth century, so the firm was a natural local choice, even if banknote printing was well outside its usual line.

Both a mayor and a deputy mayor signed — Schilles as Oberbürgermeister, Schuhmacher as Bürgermeister — a dual-signature arrangement reflecting the city's administrative structure rather than any special security requirement.
