Neuruppin's Notgeld series of 1921 came out of the same acute small-change shortage that drove hundreds of German municipalities to print their own emergency fractional currency in the early Weimar period. What distinguishes Neuruppin's issues is local pride — the town was birthplace of both the novelist Theodor Fontane and the painter Karl Friedrich Schinkel, and civic Notgeld from here tends to lean into that cultural capital harder than most.
E. Buchbinder, operating under the H. Duske imprint, was Neuruppin's own press — an unusual case of a municipality printing its scrip entirely in-house rather than contracting out to the large specialist firms like Giesecke & Devrient that handled most German Notgeld volume.
