| Obverse description | Purple and ochre Notgeld on paper, printed in letterpress by Gebrüder Parcus, Munich. The centre is occupied by a large stylised black raven perched within an ornamental wreath, flanked on either side by bold Gothic numerals '50' with 'Pf.' below each; the date '1. Mai 1921' runs vertically along the left border. The top legend in Gothic blackletter reads 'Gutschein d. Merseburg's 1921 Pfennig notgeld belongs to the vast wave of municipal emergency money that flooded Germany as coin shortages became acute in the early Weimar years. Gebrüder Parcus in Munich handled an enormous volume of notgeld commissions during this period, supplying dozens of municipalities simultaneously — which means the printing quality here is competent but the firm's attention was stretched thin across hundreds of similar contracts.
Merseburg itself, a cathedral city on the Saale with deep medieval roots, had been absorbed into Prussian Saxony long before this note existed. The city's notgeld series was redeemable locally and had no validity beyond its issuing authority.
