Vorderseitenbeschreibung The obverse is laid out in a tripartite horizontal composition printed in brown and olive tones. The central vignette, set within an octagonal frame, presents a full-length figure of Saint James the Apostle (St. Jacobus) in pilgrim's robes, holding a staff in one hand and a bowl in the other, with a halo rendered in dotted outline; the surrounding legend reads SIGIL. DER STADT MÜCHELE and the date 1642 appears flanking the figure. To the left and right, large numeral denominators reading 50 PFENNIG are set against horizontally lined panels, with the issue date AUSGEGEBEN AM 1. JULI 1921 at lower left and the authorising inscription DER MAGISTRAT with a manuscript signature at lower right; the header banner carries GUTSCHEIN DER STADT MÜCHELN and the lower border bears the validity clause.

Rückseitenbeschreibung The reverse is printed in brown and olive tones in a vertical format, dominated by a detailed architectural vignette of the Mücheln Town Hall as it appeared before fire damage, rendered in a fine linear illustrative style with characteristic Renaissance towers topped by onion domes and a long facade with arched gateway; the sky above is suggested by broad wash-like tonal areas. The denomination 50 Pfennig 50 is set in the upper header panel, and a lower cartouche carries the historical inscription noting the building's construction date and subsequent fire damage. A small artist's signature (Wessner, Coburg) is visible at lower right within the vignette.

Anmerkungen

Mücheln is a small town in Saxony-Anhalt, best known today for the open-cast lignite mining that eventually swallowed much of its original townscape. This 50 Pfennig note belongs to the vast wave of German municipal Kleingeldscheine issued in the early 1920s, when chronic coin shortages — driven first by wartime metal demands and then by postwar economic dislocation — forced thousands of towns to print their own fractional currency. Adolf Forker was a Leipzig commercial printer who handled a significant volume of these municipal commissions across central Germany.

The DeNG reference distinguishes at least five catalogue variants within this issue, likely reflecting serial number ranges or minor typographic differences between print runs.
