Schmalkalden is better known for the 1531 Protestant League than for its paper money, but the town produced a surprisingly rich run of Notgeld during the early Weimar inflation years. This 50 Pfennig note is part of a locally printed series commissioned by the district authority — Feodor Wilisch was a Schmalkalden printer, not a specialist banknote firm, which accounts for the modest production values typical of small-town Notgeld from this period.
Kurt Jäckel's design credit is worth noting; named designers on Kleingeldscheine at this level are uncommon. The DeNG reference suffix variants (.3-5/6) indicate multiple print runs or paper stocks within the same basic design.
