Sondershausen's 1921 Notgeld issue belongs to the second wave of German municipal emergency currency — by this point the Reichsbank had largely accepted that towns would keep printing their own small denominations, and the Magistrat here commissioned a locally designed series rather than sourcing a generic printed sheet from one of the larger printers. F. Mengt, whose name appears on the design credit, was almost certainly a local commercial artist rather than a professional note engraver, which accounts for the regional character of the imagery.
The Schwarzburg-Sondershausen principality had only been absorbed into Thuringia two years earlier, in 1920.
