Oldisleben is a small town in what was then the Prussian province of Saxony — administratively distinct from Thuringia proper, though often cataloged under the broader Thuringian regional groupings. This 50 Pfennig Notgeld was issued by the Gemeindekasse, the municipal treasury, during the acute small-change shortage that gripped Germany in the early 1920s as inflation eroded the practical value of metal coinage and the Reichsbank struggled to keep fractional denominations in circulation.
