Grömitz, a small Baltic coastal settlement in Holstein, issued this Notgeld note during the inflationary spiral that followed Germany's defeat in the First World War. Municipal scrip of this kind proliferated across thousands of German and Austrian communities between 1919 and 1922, filling the vacuum left by a chronic shortage of small-denomination Reichsmark coinage — hoarding and metal costs had made coins effectively disappear from everyday commerce.
Gebrüder Borchers in Lübeck was a regional commercial printer, not a specialist banknote firm, which is consistent with the improvised nature of Notgeld production generally. The DeNG reference places this within a documented series for Grömitz, suggesting at least two design variants were issued.
