Aschersleben's municipal savings bank issued this Notgeld note during the acute small-change shortage of 1921, a period when German municipalities, utilities, and private firms were producing emergency paper in enormous quantities to substitute for hoarded and melted coinage. The Stadtsparkasse series is modest in scope — the DeNG reference distinguishes only two plate varieties at this denomination, suggesting a limited and controlled print run rather than the chaotic multi-issue runs seen in larger cities.
Krelle as designer is known from several Saxony-Anhalt municipal issues of this period; attribution is consistent but little biographical detail survives in the literature.
