Aschersleben's municipal savings bank — the Stadthaupt-Sparkasse — issued this notgeld during the acute small-change shortage that followed the First World War, when hoarding of metal coins left everyday commerce effectively paralyzed across much of provincial Germany. Local authorities and institutions stepped in to fill the gap, with mixed results in terms of printing quality and design ambition.
The Krelle attribution suggests a locally commissioned artist rather than one of the larger commercial design houses that supplied generic notgeld artwork to dozens of municipalities simultaneously. Whether the design was produced in-house or contracted to a regional printer remains unclear from the reference data.
