Wiehe is a small town in Thuringia, and its 1920 Notgeld issue belongs to the enormous wave of municipal emergency money that flooded Germany after the central government failed to produce sufficient small-denomination coinage. Metal hoarding and wartime disruption had left everyday commerce in towns like Wiehe functionally paralyzed at the pfennig level — local authorities stepped in because they had no other option.
Thousands of German municipalities issued similar notes in this period, which makes provenance and condition the primary differentiators for collectors today. Wiehe's series drew no particular philatelic attention at the time of issue.
