Stöckheim, a small village within the Northeim district of Lower Saxony, was one of hundreds of German municipalities forced to print their own emergency currency after the central money supply collapsed under postwar inflation pressures. The Northeim district alone produced notgeld from dozens of towns, most of which saw only weeks of genuine local circulation before being redeemed or simply pocketed by collectors — a known problem by 1920, when municipalities were already printing specifically for that philatelic demand.
The watermarked paper is notable for a note of this size and issuing authority. Most comparable municipal notgeld relied on plain stock.
