Prien am Chiemsee issued this Notgeld in 1920 as part of the broader small-change shortage that paralyzed German commerce in the post-WWI inflation period, when coin metal was worth more than face value and hoarding stripped pfennig denominations from circulation entirely. The Gemeinderat — the municipal council, not a bank — had the legal authority under wartime and transitional emergency provisions to authorize local scrip, with Bürgermeister Weinhard's signature lending it official standing.
Schob-Druck was a Munich trade printer, not a specialist security house, and Heinsörfel's engraving credit in the margins suggests the artwork was commissioned separately. The DeNG reference covers three known variants (1074.1–3), differentiated by minor printing details.
