Blumenthal was a small industrial town on the Weser, north of Bremen, that issued its own emergency currency — Notgeld — during the severe coin shortage that followed the First World War. This 50 Pfennig note was produced by Herm. Seubert, a local printer, which was common practice for municipal Notgeld: towns contracted whoever was available nearby rather than specialist security printers.
The Gemeindevorstand, the municipal executive board, held issuing authority here — not a bank or a chamber of commerce, which places this squarely in the administrative Notgeld tradition rather than the commercial. Blumenthal was absorbed into the city of Bremen in 1939.
