Blankenburg am Harz was one of hundreds of German municipalities that issued Kleingeldscheine in 1920 to fill the void left by hoarded metal coinage — a problem that had worsened steadily since 1914 and showed no sign of resolving on its own. Louis Koch of Halberstadt was a regional printer who handled notgeld contracts for several towns in the Harz area, and the five varieties cataloged under this reference suggest either a phased release or incremental design changes within the same print run.
The 114.1–5 numbering indicates a set of five distinct types, which is on the higher end for a single denomination from a town of Blankenburg's modest size.
