Beschrijving voorzijde The obverse is dominated by an elaborate Art Nouveau guilloche underprint in olive-green and brown tones, with radiating wave and scroll patterns filling the entire field. At the top, a red serial number prefixed by letter 'B' is printed in letterpress above the central text block, which carries the issuer title 'AUSHILFSSCHEIN DER FREIEN UND HANSESTADT HAMBURG' in bold Gothic lettering, followed by the denomination 'FÜNFZIG / 50 / PFENNIG' in large display type. Below, a multi-line inscription states the acceptance conditions, validity date of 31 December 1921, place and date of issue 'Hamburg, den 1. Juni 1920', issuing authority 'Hauptstaatskasse', and a manuscript facsimile signature.

Beschrijving keerzijde The reverse is printed in purple and olive-green on an uncolored paper ground, with a bold guilloche and scroll border framing the entire note. At center, a large heraldic vignette presents the coat of arms of Hamburg — a white castle with three towers on a red shield flanked by two rampant lions as supporters, surmounted by an elaborate crown — rendered in a stylized Art Nouveau manner. The numeral '50' appears in large Gothic type in both upper corners, while the denomination legend 'FÜNFZIG' and 'PFENNIG' is lettered in the lower left and right corners respectively.

Opmerkingen

Hamburg's Hauptstaatskasse — the city-state's main treasury — issued this note under the emergency currency provisions that proliferated across Germany after the First World War. The Weimar government's inability to supply sufficient small-denomination coinage created a vacuum that municipal and regional authorities rushed to fill with their own Notgeld, and Hamburg was among the more administratively organized issuers, producing notes directly through the treasury rather than delegating to private firms or local chambers of commerce.

By 1920 the Pfennig denominations were already losing ground to inflation. Notes of this type had a working lifespan measured in months.
