| Obverse description | Light blue-green guilloche underprint covers the face, framed by a black decorative border with corner denomination numerals '50'. The upper portion carries the issuer inscription 'Stadtgemeinde Tanna (Reuss)' and the word 'Gutschein' in bold letterpress, above the denomination 'Fünfzig Pfennig' rendered in ornate Gothic blackletter script. Tanna, a small town in the Reuss principality of Thuringia, issued this 50 Pfennig Notgeld during the acute coin shortage that followed Germany's defeat in 1918. Municipal authorities across Germany were effectively forced into printing their own emergency currency as the Reichsbank failed to supply small-denomination coinage in sufficient quantity — by 1920, thousands of towns had done the same.
Reuss itself had ceased to exist as a sovereign state in 1918 with the abdication of Heinrich XXVII, leaving Tanna as part of the newly formed Volksstaat Reuss. The issuing authority named here was already operating within a defunct political entity when these notes were printed.
