Trier's 50 Pfennig Notgeld from 1920 was printed locally by Schaar & Dathe, a Trier-based firm that handled a significant portion of the city's emergency currency output during the postwar shortage years. The Rhenish city was under French occupation at the time — part of the Allied Rhineland occupation zone established under the Treaty of Versailles — which complicated the municipal finances underpinning these issues considerably.
Schaar & Dathe printed for their own city rather than farming the work to Leipzig or Berlin, as many municipalities did. That local production chain is reflected in the relatively consistent print quality across the Trier Notgeld series.
