Trostberg's 50 Pfennig notgeld was issued in 1920 as part of the vast municipal emergency currency wave that swept Germany following the First World War, when coin shortages made small-denomination paper a practical necessity rather than a policy choice. Thousands of German towns printed their own notgeld during this period, and many — Trostberg included — issued notes that were collected as souvenirs rather than spent, creating artificial print runs with little genuine circulation.
The printing date of 30 April 1945 is almost certainly a cataloging anomaly or a transcription error; that date is the day Hitler died in Berlin, by which point Bavaria was falling to American forces and no municipal printing authority was producing notgeld from 1920 plates.
