Peine's municipal government issued this Notgeld during the inflationary squeeze of 1920, when small-denomination coinage had effectively disappeared from circulation — hoarded or melted — and hundreds of German towns were forced to print their own stopgap currency. The Parcus brothers in Munich were among the most prolific Notgeld printers of the period, producing issues for municipalities across Germany, which accounts for the geographic distance between printer and issuer.
