Beschrijving voorzijde The left half of the obverse carries a bold letterpress vignette of the Uenglinger Tor, a medieval city gate of Stendal, rendered in fine crosshatch line engraving within a framed panel. To the right, the denomination "Fünfzig Pfennige" is printed in large Gothic blackletter script, with "Fünfzig" in red and "Pfennige" in black, above the issuing designation "Stadtkassenschein"; a serial number, the place and date "Stendal, den 27. Febr. 1920", an embossed municipal seal, two manuscript signatures under the heading "Der Magistrat:", and a red numerals "50" within a circular guilloche roundel occupy the lower right.

Stendal's 1920 emergency issue belongs to the vast Notgeld wave that flooded Germany as the Reichsbank struggled to keep small-denomination coinage in circulation following wartime metal requisitions and postwar economic dislocation. Municipal treasuries — not banks — became de facto currency issuers almost by necessity. The Stadtkasse, as the city's fiscal administrative office, had the legal standing to issue such notes locally, and the embossed seal was the primary guarantee of authenticity in the absence of more sophisticated security printing.

Stendal issues from this period are moderately common but attract collector interest as a group due to the town's historical associations with Johann Joachim Winckelmann, the art historian born there in 1717.
