Boppard's 1920 Notgeld issue belongs to the vast wave of municipal emergency currency that flooded Germany as the Reichsbank's coin supply collapsed under wartime and postwar economic strain. Schaar & Dathe of Trier handled a significant volume of Rhineland Notgeld printing during this period, and their output for small Rhine valley towns is generally competent — the watermarked paper here being a modest but deliberate anti-counterfeiting measure for what was, after all, strictly local scrip.
The DeNG reference suffix variants (.1-3/3) indicate multiple design or printing states within the series, worth distinguishing for completeness.
