Meuselbach is a small resort village in the Thuringian Forest, and like hundreds of German municipalities during 1920–1921, it issued Kleingeldscheine to address the acute small-change shortage that followed the First World War. What distinguishes many Thuringian Forest notgeld issues from purely utilitarian emergency scrip is the deliberate appeal to collectors — local authorities quickly recognized that philatelic and notgeld collectors would buy and hoard these notes, effectively generating revenue for the municipality at no redemption cost.
Whether this particular 50 Pfennig note was part of a cynically designed collector series or a genuine circulating necessity is a question the issue date alone cannot answer.
