| Obverse description | Dark blue-grey stippled background with the Einbeck municipal coat of arms at centre, rendered as a circular vignette: a fortified gatehouse with two crenellated towers flanking a rampant lion above a Gothic arched gateway, with quatrefoil ornaments in the spandrels. Einbeck's 1920 Notgeld issue belongs to the vast wave of municipal emergency money that flooded Germany when coin shortages became acute during and after the First World War — the Reich simply couldn't mint fast enough to meet demand. Stadt Einbeck, like hundreds of other small towns, filled the gap with locally authorized scrip. By 1920 some municipalities were treating Notgeld as a revenue stream, printing attractive series specifically for collectors rather than cashiers.
Whether Einbeck's issue was purely functional or partly collector-oriented is worth investigating before pricing accordingly.
