Bromberg — Bydgoszcz in Polish — was in the middle of a genuine territorial crisis when this note was issued. The city had been part of Prussia since the First Partition of Poland in 1772, but the Treaty of Versailles, signed June 1919, awarded it to the newly reconstituted Polish Republic. German municipal authorities continued issuing notgeld through this transition period, effectively printing emergency currency for a city that was legally changing hands.
The Magistrat's authority to issue these notes evaporated when Polish administration formally took control in January 1920.
