| Descrizione del dritto | The obverse is printed in grey-blue and black on buff paper, with a bold outer rectangular border. A large central triangular vignette in grey-blue carries the numeral '50' and the word 'PFENNIG' in heavy block lettering, with a stylised fir tree motif at the apex and smaller decorative triangular corner elements at the base. Horizontal banner-like ribbons bearing the inscription 'GUTSCHEIN DER STADT DÜSSELDORF' flank the triangle, while a red serial number is positioned in the upper right corner. Below the main vignette, a four-line redemption text in letterpress gives the validity date and issuing authority. |

| Descrizione del rovescio | The reverse repeats the triangular grey-blue vignette on a buff ground, here containing the civic coat of arms of Düsseldorf — a crowned lion rampant holding a sword and resting on an anchor — set within a shield at the centre of the triangle, with the stylised fir tree at the apex and small decorative triangular corner pieces at the base. The denomination numeral '50' appears in bold at both the upper left and upper right corners outside the triangle, and the horizontal banner ribbons again carry the text 'GUTSCHEIN DER STADT DÜSSELDORF'. The spelled-out denomination 'FÜNFZIG PFENNIG' is printed in large block capitals below the vignette. |

Düsseldorf's 1919 emergency issue belongs to the vast wave of municipal Notgeld that flooded Germany as central coin supplies collapsed following the armistice. Cities, towns, even individual businesses were legally permitted to fill the gap — Düsseldorf being among the larger urban issuers gave its notes slightly wider regional acceptance than the village issues printed the same year.
Local printing was common for these issues, and the short run-life was intentional: Notgeld was theoretically redeemable once Reichsbank coin returned to circulation, though in practice many municipalities dragged out redemption well into the early 1920s.
