Linz am Rhein issued this note in 1919 as part of Germany's vast Notgeld phenomenon — a direct consequence of the wartime coin shortage that had stripped small denominations from everyday circulation. Hundreds of German municipalities printed their own emergency pfennig notes during this period, and M. Dumont Schauberg in Cologne was a prolific commercial printer that fulfilled orders for numerous Rhineland towns simultaneously.
Linz am Rhein sat within the Allied occupation zone after the Armistice, which added a layer of administrative complexity to local currency arrangements that purely domestic issuers didn't face.
