Baden-Baden's 1919 Kleingeldscheine were a direct response to the coin shortage that plagued Germany in the immediate postwar period — silver and nickel had been hoarded or melted, and the Reichsbank could not fill the gap fast enough. Municipal authorities across Germany were legally permitted to issue small-denomination emergency paper under wartime and transitional regulations, and hundreds of cities did exactly that.
Baden-Baden's issues from this period are generally well-printed for municipal Notgeld, reflecting the town's relative affluence as a resort destination. The 50 Pfennig denomination was the workhorse of daily retail transactions.
