Comments

Triberg im Schwarzwald issued this note in 1918 under the municipal Kleingeldscheine system, which proliferated across German towns as small-denomination coinage vanished into hoarding and war-metal collection drives. Poppen & Ortmann in Freiburg handled an enormous volume of these regional emergency issues for Baden municipalities, and their output for Triberg is workmanlike rather than decorative — the firm was printing utility, not art.

Triberg's series is modest by Notgeld standards, lacking the elaborate imagery that later 1920s issues would chase as collectibles. This was money made to move, not to be saved.
