Kiel's 50 Pfennig Notgeld of 1918 was issued by the city government at a moment when the Imperial monetary system was visibly failing — small-denomination coins had been hoarded or melted, and municipal authorities across Germany filled the gap with locally printed paper. Kiel's position as the main base of the Imperial High Seas Fleet gave the city an unusually charged atmosphere that year; the November 1918 mutiny of sailors in Kiel harbour directly triggered the German Revolution.
Municipal Notgeld of this period was typically printed by local commercial printers on short notice, with no involvement from the Reichsdruckerei.
