Stadthauptkasse Burg bei Magdeburg was one of hundreds of German municipal treasuries that began issuing Kleingeldersatz — small-change substitutes — from 1916 onward as metal coinage disappeared into wartime hoarding and industrial requisition. By 1918, the flood of local Notgeld had become so unmanageable that the Reichsbank was actively pressuring municipalities to cease production, largely unsuccessfully.
Carl Schleicher & Schüll of Düren were among the more prolific commercial printers servicing this demand, producing issues for dozens of municipalities simultaneously. Their output was competent but high-volume.
