Hameln issued its own emergency currency — Notgeld — in 1918 as the imperial financial system buckled under wartime strain and small change disappeared entirely from circulation. The city's magistrate, like hundreds of municipal authorities across Germany that year, was filling a vacuum the Reichsbank could not address. These local emissions were technically illegal under existing currency law but were tolerated out of necessity.
L. Enders as designer is a local attribution. The note was produced in Hameln itself, not at one of the major specialist printers that handled bulk Notgeld runs.
