Immenstadt im Allgäu issued this 50 Pfennig Notgeld note in 1918 as the Imperial German monetary system buckled under wartime strain. The Reichsbank had effectively stopped supplying small-denomination coin to municipalities by mid-war — hoarding and metal requisitions had stripped silver and even base-metal coinage from everyday commerce. Local authorities across Bavaria and beyond were left to paper over the gap themselves, literally.
The Stadtmagistrat, the municipal magistrate's office, had the legal standing to authorize such emergency issues. Immenstadt's version is a modest provincial example from a market town that served the surrounding Allgäu farming communities — nothing unusual in the series, but a clean piece of documentary evidence for just how far monetary improvisation had penetrated German civic life by the war's final year.
