Büdingen's 1918 50 Pfennig notgeld belongs to the first wave of municipal emergency currency issued during the acute coin shortage that developed as the German war economy hoarded metal for military use. District committees like the Kreisausschuss had no traditional authority to issue currency — they acted out of local necessity, filling a gap the Reichsbank simply could not address at the retail level.
Büdingen itself is a small Hessian town, and the district's issue was modest in scale. These hyper-local notgeld pieces were rarely retained outside their issuing area, which cuts both ways on survival rates.
