Krefeld's 1917 emergency currency — Kriegsgeld, in the vernacular of the period — was one of hundreds of municipal issues flooding the German economy as the imperial government's metal coinage disappeared into the war machine. Copper, nickel, and iron were requisitioned; cities and towns scrambled to fill the gap with locally authorized paper. Krefeld, a major Rhine textile center, issued its own series under municipal authority rather than waiting for centralized distribution.
The spelling "Crefeld" on the note reflects the older Prussian orthography, officially modernized to "Krefeld" only in 1929.
