Buttstädt is a small market town in Thuringia, and this 1917 note belongs to the first wave of German municipal emergency currency — Notgeld issued as fractional coinage disappeared from circulation hoarded for its metal content during the war. Dozens of towns this size printed their own 50 Pfennig notes simply to make change, with minimal oversight from central authorities.
Early 1917 Notgeld of this type was often printed on whatever paper stock the local printer had available, which accounts for the variation in paper quality and weight seen across surviving examples from small Thuringian issuers.
