Bad Nauheim's 1917 notgeld issue came out of pure necessity — the wartime metal shortage had drained small-denomination coinage from circulation across Germany, forcing hundreds of municipalities to print their own emergency substitutes. The city's spa economy, which had drawn wealthy cardiac patients to its saline baths since the nineteenth century, was by 1917 running on a skeleton staff; most able-bodied men were at the front, and the thermal establishments were partly repurposed for convalescent care.
G. Naumann's Druckerei in Frankfurt handled a considerable volume of municipal notgeld work during this period, and the printing quality on Bad Nauheim issues is generally competent rather than distinguished. Serial number placement sometimes varies noticeably within the same run — likely a hand-stamping irregularity rather than a press error.
