Stadtlengsfeld is a small Thuringian town — historically a spa settlement — that issued this Notgeld piece in 1917 when the German imperial government's wartime metal requisitions had stripped small communities of nearly all their subsidiary coinage. Municipalities were explicitly authorized to fill the gap themselves, which produced tens of thousands of distinct local issues across the Reich in 1916–1922, most printed in tiny quantities for purely local use.

The 1917 date places this in the earliest wave of paper Kleingeldscheine, before the more elaborately designed collector-targeted issues of 1920–21 muddied the waters between genuine emergency currency and philatelic product. A straightforward utility piece from a town that had no particular reason to dress it up.
