Tambach-Dietharz is a small spa town in the Thuringian Forest, and like hundreds of German municipalities in 1917, it resorted to locally printed Notgeld as the wartime economy drained metal coinage from circulation. These township issues were typically authorized under emergency provisions and printed by whatever local printer was available — quality and consistency varied considerably, and many were never intended to circulate beyond the issuing parish's immediate commercial sphere.
Municipal issues from this period were frequently redeemed and destroyed within months, making intact survivors more common in collector sets than in genuinely circulated condition.
