Glatz was one of hundreds of German municipalities that issued emergency paper money — Notgeld — during the severe coin shortage that followed the First World War. The city's notes were produced locally by L. Schirmer, a regional printer rather than one of the major specialized Notgeld houses, which is why the production quality across this series can vary noticeably between printings.
