Sankt Goarshausen sits directly on the Rhine at the foot of the Loreley rock, and like hundreds of small German municipalities it resorted to printing its own emergency notes — Notgeld — when wartime coin shortages made small-change transactions nearly impossible after 1914. The city issues are catalogued under multiple varieties, and the Grabowski/Mehl reference S13.1d identifies this as a specific sub-variety within the 1917–1922 Notgeld period, distinguished likely by a signature, date, or serial configuration from its siblings in the series.
Vaters 6415.05.04 confirms collector recognition of distinct printings. Municipal Notgeld from small Rhineland towns circulated heavily and was rarely preserved carefully — most survivors show significant handling.
