Comments

Dithmarschen — a marshy stretch of the Schleswig-Holstein coast with an unusually stubborn sense of its own identity — produced wartime Notgeld through a joint administrative arrangement between its two Kreise, Norder- and Süderdithmarschen. That kind of inter-Kreis cooperation for a shared emission was not universal; most German districts issued independently. The printer, J. C. König & Ebhardt of Hannover, was one of the more prolific Notgeld producers of the 1914–1922 period, handling a considerable volume of municipal and district issues from across Lower Saxony and beyond.

Paper quality in König & Ebhardt Notgeld tends to be reliable, but Dithmarschen issues in particular are prone to edge toning from the damp coastal climate of the region they circulated in.
