| Obverse description | Intaglio portrait of José Pedro Varela in three-quarter view to the right occupies the central and right portions of the note, with his name inscribed on a ribbon scroll at the lower right. The Uruguayan coat of arms appears at the upper left, set against a fine guilloche underprint in pale tones with octagonal rosette patterns at the lower left corners. Three facsimile signatures appear in the centre-left field, attributed to the Presidente, Gerente General, and Secretario General, with the denomination '$50' printed in red at the lower corners. |
